What's New March

What's New March

Hi and welcome to March edition of what’s new! This month we will be covering basics on pet ownership – vaccinations, worming and flea control

Vaccinations

You may have been aware that we have recently changed the vaccination protocols. This change is being seen throughout Australia and is doe in accordance to the American Association of Canine and Feline practitioners. For dogs, the heartworm injection and kennel cough vaccination is still done yearly but the C3 (core viruses – distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis) is only done once every 3 years.

Heartworm injections are still routinely done every year.

For cats, the vaccination protocol will be tailored to suit each cat’s needs as each cat is unique in terms of its level of association with other cats and catteries. You just need to let us know if your cat does stay in catteries and/or whether your cat has unsupervised outdoor access.

You don’t have to remember when and what vaccine is needed as it can be confusing but if you like, feel free to ask our friendly vets and we will be more than happy to explain the protocols to you.

Worming

Worming is often neglected as it is easy to forget to worm your pets but it is still vital for you to keep your pets up to date with worming. The most important reason is that many of the worms your pet carries are transmissible to humans, especially children. Recommended worming protocol is as follows: 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 weeks, then monthly until 6months of age, and then every 3 months for life.

Fleas

Fleas can be debilitating, especially if your pet is allergic to their bites. Flea bite allergies can flare up with only a few fleas on your pets body so even if you cannot see the fleas with the naked eye, it doesn’t mean your pet is not scratching due to fleas. Flea control is best treated with a spot-on treatment every month

That’s all for this month, hope to see you all back next month!
